Q. What is Enhanced Security Login?

A. Enhanced Security Login is a new online security feature, similar to that used in on-line banking sites, that provides you and all criminal justice users with additional protection from fraud and identity theft. Enhanced Security Login helps prevent unauthorized access to your eJusticeNY Portal account, keeping criminal justice information and messaging services secure.

Q. Why do I need to use Enhanced Security Login?

A. Enhanced Security Login allows the eJusticeNY Portal software to identify you as the true owner of your account by recognizing not only your login information, but also your computer. If we don’t recognize your computer, we will request additional information from you (like your father’s birthday or the name of your High School) to make sure only you gain access to your account. This protects you from someone stealing your UserID and Password and trying to login to the eJusticeNY Portal impersonating you.

Q. How do I enroll in Enhanced Security Login?

A. A phased roll-out will be done to have users enrolled into Enhanced Security Login.  A user that has a valid account in the eJusticeNY Portal will automatically be prompted to enter their UserID and Password, select five (5) security/challenge questions and provide the answers to them.  A confirmation will be received when you have successfully enrolled into Enhanced Security Login.

Q. How does Enhanced Security Login work?

A. The first time you login after we implement this additional security feature, you will be asked to select and answer five “Challenge Questions” (like your father’s birthday or the name of your High School). From this point on, you will be required to answer these questions when or if you login to the eJusticeNY Portal from a computer not enrolled in Enhanced Security Login.

Please note: if you use multiple browsers on the same computer, you will need to add Enhanced Security to each browser separately.

Q. What are some of the Challenge Questions that I may be asked?

A. Challenge Questions are questions that you will be asked if you login from a computer that does not have the Enhanced Security. Once you answer these questions correctly you will be granted access to your account. Some examples of the types of Challenge Questions are:

• What is the name of your first employer?

• What is the name of your first pet?

• What was your favorite restaurant in college?

• What is your best friend's name?

• In what city were you married?

• What was the name of your High School?

Q. How do you recognize my computer?

A. When you add extra security to your computer, a secure cookie is placed on your computer. The secure cookie is unique, and when used in combination with your login information, it creates a unique way for us to identify you. For each login attempt after you add extra security to one computer, this secure cookie is validated along with the login identification you normally enter. This cookie is only used by the Portal software to validate your identity and does not contain any personal information.

Q. How will adding extra security protection help me?

A. Extra security protection on your computer allows us to recognize your computer along with your normal login information, which helps add further protection from unauthorized access to the criminal justice information in the eJusticeNY Portal. If someone were to obtain your login information and try to access your account from their computer, having extra security protection will stop them from gaining access to your account because they will be asked for information only you know.

Q. Do I have to use the extra security feature?

A. Yes. All users of the eJusticeNY Portal will be required to use Enhanced Security Login.  This feature is being phased in with different user groups at a time.

Q. How does Enhanced Security Login protect me?

A. Enhanced Security Login lets the eJusticeNY Portal software know that it’s really you logging into your account because we recognize your computer and your login information. If we do not recognize your computer because you are using a different one than the one that has the extra security protection, then you will be asked to provide additional information (like your father’s birthday or the name of your High School).

Q. Can I login to my eJusticeNY Portal account from anywhere?

A. Yes, even with the Enhanced Security Login feature activated, you can still login to your eJusticeNY Portal account from anywhere, so long as the computer used complies with the security requirements of your organization. If we do not recognize the computer you are using then we will simply ask for additional information (like your father’s birthday or the name of your High School) before allowing access.

Q. Why am I still being asked for additional information when I log in from a computer that I have already added extra security to?

A. This is probably occurring because the secure cookie that was placed within your browser has been deleted. One common reason this occurs is because Spyware blocker software typically deletes all cookies to remove potentially risky items from your computer, even though very few of the cookies are actually security risks. To use this feature without being asked for additional information at each login, the secure cookie that we use to identify you must stay within your browser. We recommend you do not delete these cookies if you do not want to be asked for additional information at each login.

Q. I share my computer with others who also uses the eJusticeNY Portal. Can all of us still login from the same computer?

A. Yes. You can still use the same computer to login to your own eJusticeNY Portal accounts safely. This is because your secure cookie is linked to your login information. There is no limit as to how many secure cookies can be installed on the same computer.

Q. When I receive a challenge question, do my answers need to be exact?

A. Challenge question answers do allow room for “fuzzy logic” or the ability to decipher the response, within reason. For example, if your response to a question when you initially enrolled was “Italian” and when presented with the question, you responded “italian”, your question would be considered to be answered correctly.

Q. What should I do if I forget my password?

A. Enhanced Security Login does not have a separate password to remember. The UserID and password you will use will be the same one that is normally used to log onto the eJusticeNY Portal.  Enhanced Security Login does its validating “behind the scenes.” However, if you have forgotten your normal eJusticeNY Portal password, please contact the Portal Help Desk at 1-888-462-8003 and staff will reset your password.

Q. Why would my account become locked using Enhanced Security Login?

A. Your Enhanced Security account may become locked if challenge questions are not answered correctly during a login. If that happens, see your agency TAC/Portal Administrator. Your TAC will need to contact the Portal Help Desk at 1-888-462-8003 and staff will unlock your account. Once unlocked, you will be prompted to enroll into Enhanced Security Login again.
